Help win a library visit from author, Jan Brett!

janbrettmitten.jpg What child, parent or teacher doesn’t love author/illustratorJan Brett’s telling of the Ukrainian folktale “The Mitten”?  This winter Jan Brett is holding a contest that will have you revisiting old favorites and discovering new ones.  By matching pictures to the correct book and completing an entry form on behalf of the Peabody Institute Library (82 Main Street, Peabody, MA 01960) you can enter your library in an opportunity to win a visit from Jan Brett!

So visit the Jan Brett’s website or stop by the library and discover all of Jan Brett’s 27 beautiful picturebooks ~ if they’re not already checked-out!  The contest runs through May 12, 2008 and entry forms and books will also be available at the library - so stop by and play (and read a book or two) today!

The Children’s Music Corner

Have you ever noticed how children respond to music?  Whether it’s a lullaby, classical music, or a silly song, music is sure to bring even the youngest listeners peace, pleasure and happiness (not-to-mention a wiggle or two).  The Children’s Music Corner is our special place to share some of the finds we’ve come across.

Dan Zanes is one of our favorite children’s musicians.  Whether he’s playing his banjo and singing an old-timey favorite or rocking out to something more current, his music is sure to get you dancing (or at least tapping your toes).  I introduced my friend Paxton to DZ before he was 1 and I’m proud to say that by 2 he was dancing on his chair at a DZ concert!  Paxton and I are huge fans and I’m sure you will be too once you check out some of his tunes.

In the spirit of the season, we thought we’d add a holiday music video Dan made for Heifer International in 2006.  We hope you enjoy the music, the animals, and the message.

Winter Story Trees

winter-treessnowflake-sisterssmall.jpgWhat is a winter story tree? In our Children’s Room we’ve been meeting on Tuesday afternoons and sharing winter stories and crafting ornaments based on characters and themes found in the stories. These ornaments are then displayed on small trees next to their picture book ~ that is until someone checks them out! So far we’ve read “Snowflake Sisters” by J. Patrick Lewis and “Stranger in the Woods” by Carl R. Sams. But we still have one tree left…so if you’re between ages 5-11, please join us for our final Winter Story Tree program on Tuesday, December 11th at 4PM. We hope you’ll make a special visit to see our beautiful trees soon!

The inspiration for our Winter Story Trees comes from Concord Museum’s “Family Trees: A Celebration of Children’s Literature”, an annual event that families and children of ALL ages will enjoy!
